Volunteering affects the elderly in a positive way by slowing the aging process, increasing self-esteem, and improving both mental and physical health.  Through volunteering those aged 55 and over will increase their longevity by participating in such activities that promote health.  Studies have proven that volunteering increases cardiovascular health and reduces the risk of heart disease.  It is also known to improve mental health through social interaction and increases morale through the relationships that are created with fellow volunteers.
